Recently, EMU embarked on the new school year with new street signs that pay tribute to famous artists, scientists and philosophers. It was a passion project by Dean of Communication Faculty Assoc. Dr. Agah Gümüş, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and Vice Rector for Administrative and Technical Affairs. Dr. Ozgur Eren. They collaborated on the project to bring these new street signs to EMU. Each of the signs were assigned to certain faculties that matched the icon’s name. Ibn Sina is on the street of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Mimar Sinan is on the street where the Faculty of Architecture is located and others have also been assigned to their appropriate place. Paying respects to these great minds that helped shape humanity.

I took it upon myself to talk to some students in EMU, to get their intake on the new signs to see what they thought of it.

“It’s interesting, it’s smart to put these people’s names in the streets where people can constantly see them and maybe be more intrigued to learn about them” said Rada Daghstani, a student in EMU after I asked her thoughts on the change and displayed some pictures showing her the new signs.

“I think it’s a good thing, we all study about these famous people, and seeing their names and faces in the streets might spark some curiosity to want to search about them online and get more information!” Chimed in Huzayfa Najm, a Syrian, Television and Cinema student in EMU.

“I think it’s good, because it gives people an opportunity to see these people and know who they were, and maybe they would be interested in them and it would help keep these legends alive in our minds. They did something important for the world, these people helped bring us to where we are today, but at the same time it may be confusing, maybe people got used to the old names in the university so they could get confused with the new street names” said Russian student Elizaveta Gorshkova.

“I feel like that would be good for the students, to at least be aware of these names, because maybe some of them may not be aware of these people who changed the world. If we see some name we must google it and starting from that we could discover more about them.I certainly see it as a positive thing, it’s all about making people discover these geniuses” added Idriss Askour.

So after discussing the topic with some of our university students. I think it’s safe to say that many people are excited about the new street signs. And I, for one am happy to see this positive reaction from our students!
