The first session of experimental film – Triangle Film Screening (TFS), organised by students of the Department of Radio-TV and Film, was held on Wednesday, October 24 at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Eastern Mediterranean University.
The screening which aimed at exhibiting the creativeness involved in film-making, explores the history of film and cinema from America to Europe, as well as the individuals who have made names in the in the industry. The above is in addition to the technological advancements that occurred overtime to transform the filming industry.
Nima and Peman, students of the Cinema and Television Department are the brains behind the Triangle Film Screening, who believe that creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way. According to them, the film screening is to inspire students who intend to pursue a career in film-making, because it is not enough to get just one angle of what film-making is. “We had similar screenings in class but because of the time or number of people, many students don’t get to explore different aspects of film-making. We didn’t think it was enough, as many second or third year film students haven’t seen some important films that would broaden their horizons. So, in the beginning, it was three of us who started coming up with ideas and finding a time to watch these films, and then we decided to extend it to everyone.” Like Nikos Kazantzakis said, “since we cannot change reality, let us change the eyes which see reality.” This exhibition has lots of education benefits especially in the sense of offering an alternative platform for students to explore different aspect film-making beyond the classroom environment, Nima further explained.
Owing to its benefits, a schedule has been made to continue the screenings of significant films in the history of cinema which have challenged the dominant film-making trends in different eras and have offered alternative approaches to the medium. This semester, the screening will focus on filmmakers who have pointed their cameras at themselves and/or at the medium of film itself. These are films with a sense of self awareness and the stories of the story tellers themselves. The screening will follow a specific theme in every semester to create unity between the series of films to be exhibited.
