November 25th is a day designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It is a day set aside to raise awareness about women around the world as victims of rape, domestic violence and other forms of molestation. It also highlights the fact that the scale and true nature of the problem is most times hidden. The official theme framed by the United Nations for the 2019 awareness campaign is “Orange the world: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape.”
The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at Eastern Mediterranean University did not exclude itself from joining others around the world to support this movement and create awareness by organizing an event tagged “Kadinna Siddete Karsi Ben de Buradayim” which translates to “I am here to support the movement to end the violence against women.”
Speaking in an interview, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anil Kema Kaya expressed her delight in joining millions of other people around the world in the movement to stop violence against women. This event is in solidarity with the international day as designated by the UN, to help create awareness at the Faculty and entire University, that all kinds of violence against women must STOP. Moreover, Dr. Engin Aluc of the New Media and Journalism Department hopes for more staff and students to take part in the movement from within and beyond the Faculty of Communication.
In a related interview, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanife Aliefendioglu also hinted that the November 25th is a day connected with the 10th of December which is the International Human Rights Day, adding that in order to support the current movement, participants are to demonstrate by stamping their palms in different colors to make imprints to say no to violence against women. “As a feminist-activist, I’m really happy to be part of the event and want to see those kind events and awareness activities collaborated with students and instructors in the Faculty,” Assoc. Prof. Hanife concluded.
The event was successful and well attended by numerous staff and students who came to support the movement.
